How we make money
The HVAC Index is free to use. We are paid in two ways, and neither changes what you see.
Referral and affiliate fees
Some providers pay us a fee when you reach them through a link on this site and sign up or book. Links that can earn a fee are marked as sponsored in the page code and open in a new tab through our own tracking address. Manufacturer and government channels pay nothing.
Flat fees per request
On pages where you ask to be contacted by one provider, that provider pays us a fee for the request. For most providers the fee is flat and is the same whatever happens next.
Installers that share in a signed job
Some heating and cooling installers instead pay a lower fee per request plus a small share of the contract value if you hire them. We confirm those jobs by asking you how it went, only if you agreed to that, and by checking with the installer. The share is paid by the installer and is never added to your price. It does not change which installers you are shown or how they are ranked.
What payment never buys
- A place on a shortlist, or a higher place. Ranking rules are published on the methodology page and read only facts about the provider.
- A better price display. Every price is the one on the provider's own page on the date shown.
- Removal of a caution. If a product is compounded, or a price is only an introductory offer, it says so whoever pays.
Where a provider pays us nothing, we say nothing different about them.
