## How the ranges are built

- **Ductless mini split, one or two rooms** Low is the one-head price that NYC (Vinco) and Central NJ installers both start at ($4,500) and high is the top of Vinco's two-head range ($11,000); the Long Island one-head range ($5,000-$8,000) and two-zone range ($7,500-$10,000) sit inside.
- **Ductless mini splits, whole home under 1,500 sq ft** A home under 1,500 sq ft is assumed to need two or three heads, so the band runs from the low end of Vinco's two-head range ($7,500) to the high end of its three-head range ($13,500); Long Island and NJ three-zone ranges ($10,000-$15,000, $11,000-$15,000) overlap the upper half.
- **Ductless mini splits, whole home of 1,500 to 2,500 sq ft** A 1,500-2,500 sq ft home is assumed to need about four heads, so the band is the union of the two NYC four-head ranges (Vinco $11,000-$15,000, Brooklyn installer $13,000-$19,000), with three-zone ranges on Long Island and in NJ starting at about the same low end.
- **Ductless mini splits, whole home over 2,500 sq ft** A home over 2,500 sq ft is assumed to need five or more heads; low starts at the national 4-6+ head range ($16,000) rather than Vinco's $13,000 because a large home sits at the top of that count, and high ($26,000) is a judgement between Vinco's open-ended $20,000+ and the national $28,000.
- **New York City, factor 1** Reference: every band is built from NYC and NYC-adjacent installer pages (Vinco, a Brooklyn installer) plus national guides; Vinco says Manhattan jobs carry a 10 to 20 percent surcharge over Brooklyn or Queens, so the band is a blended five-borough figure, not a Manhattan one.
- **NY suburbs, factor 1** Judgement: Long Island installer ranges (one zone $5,000-$8,000, three zones $10,000-$15,000) run about 6 to 9 percent above the NYC installer midpoints, which is inside the gap between the two NYC installers themselves, so no discount or premium is applied; Westchester and Hudson Valley installer prices were not found, so this rests on Long Island only.
- **New Jersey, factor 0.95** Judgement: one Central NJ installer prices at or above NYC (one zone $4,500-$8,000, three zones $11,000-$15,000) while two other NJ installer guides (Main Street Service Pros, Dimatic Control) price one zone at $3,000-$5,000 and $3,500-$5,500, and Dimatic cites NJ labour 15 to 25 percent above the national average, so a small discount to NYC is used.
- **Upstate NY, factor 0.85** Weakest factor and mostly judgement: a cost-estimate site (hvacprojectcost.com) cites NYC-metro HVAC labour at $100-$200 an hour against $65-$100 upstate, but the two upstate installer pages found price above NYC (single room from $5,800; Mitsubishi single zone $10,000-$15,000), so no direct installer comparison supports a discount.

## What moves the price

- System size drives the equipment: Fixr prices a 2,000 sq ft home at $8,000 to $20,000 and Rewiring America moves from $17,000-$23,000 (1,500-2,500 sq ft) to $22,500-$28,000 (2,500-5,500 sq ft). [Source](https://www.rewiringamerica.org/research/home-electrification-cost-estimates)
- Every extra indoor head adds cost: Vinco says a second head adds roughly $3,000 to $4,000 in NYC, a Long Island installer says $2,000 to $5,000 per added zone, and a Central NJ installer says $1,800 to $3,000. [Source](https://www.vincomechanical.com/mini-split-cost-nyc)
- Existing ducts change the job: a Long Island installer prices a ducted heat pump into existing ducts at $12,000 to $18,000 but a boiler-to-heat-pump conversion with no ducts at $18,000 to $30,000. [Source](https://www.patchogue.ac/guides/heat-pump-cost-long-island)
- A 100 amp panel can add a big line item: Vinco prices a 200A upgrade at $3,000 to $6,000 in NYC, a Long Island installer at about $2,500, and a NJ guide at $1,500 to $3,000. [Source](https://www.vincomechanical.com/mini-split-cost-nyc)
- Removing an oil tank adds to a boiler conversion: about $3,500 for an underground tank on Long Island and $1,600 to $3,500 for a clean underground removal in NJ, far more if soil is contaminated. [Source](https://nj-oil-tank-removal.com/cost/)
- NYC building logistics add cost: Vinco says Manhattan installs carry a 10 to 20 percent surcharge over Brooklyn or Queens, and rooftop condensers can need a crane day at $3,500 to $10,000. [Source](https://www.vincomechanical.com/mini-split-cost-nyc)
- Cold-climate and premium models cost more: a Brooklyn installer adds $500 to $1,500 over cooling-only units, and a Central NJ installer says Mitsubishi HyperHeat adds $1,500 to $3,000. [Source](https://brownstoneheatingac.com/mini-split-installation-cost-brooklyn/)
- Clean Heat base rates fell on September 1, 2026 (for example National Grid, NYSEG, RG&E, Central Hudson and O&R full-load now $4,000 at the standard rate), while a new Weatherized Tier pays $8,000 for homes that meet insulation standards. - The federal 25C credit no longer applies to installations after December 31, 2025, so 2026 prices are not offset by the old 30 percent credit. [Source](https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/energy-efficient-home-improvement-credit)

## Common questions

### How much does a mini split cost installed in New York and New Jersey?

On our New York City reference, one or two rooms run $4,500 to $11,000 and a whole home of 1,500 to 2,500 sq ft runs $11,000 to $19,000, installed and before rebates. These are ranges built from published prices, not quotes; an installer sets the real price after seeing the home.

### Why does a whole-home mini split cost so much more than one head?

Each zone needs its own indoor unit, plus refrigerant line sets, a condensate path and an electrical run. The bands for whole-home systems assume the number of indoor units listed in the method section, so the price climbs with the number of rooms served.

### Is a mini split cheaper than a ducted heat pump?

Not always. A whole-home ductless system of 1,500 to 2,500 sq ft runs $11,000 to $19,000 against $14,000 to $22,000 for a ducted heat pump of that size. If the home has no ducts, adding them to a ducted system runs $17,000 to $29,500, which is why homes with radiators or baseboard heat usually go ductless.

### Do mini splits qualify for rebates?

Some utility programs pay for ductless whole-home projects and some pay only for whole-house projects, and amounts and status differ by electric company. Open the area page for your region to see the programs for your utility, each with its source and the date we read it. The federal 25C tax credit ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025.

### What is not included in these prices?

Electrical panel upgrades and oil tank removal are priced separately on the cost page because only some homes need them. Prices were last checked October 27, 2026.
